Junior Test Engineer
Location: Cambridge (Office-based/Hybrid)
The Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-focused Junior Software Test Engineer to join our growing team in Cambridge. This is a unique role designed for someone who wants to go beyond "checking boxes." You will become a genuine in-house expert on our product suite, bridging the gap between our technical development team and the real-world application of our software.
You will spend your time conducting rigorous manual testing on both physical Android devices and bespoke software environments, while progressively contributing to our automated test suites. This role is ideal for a junior professional who enjoys "breaking things" to understand how to make them better.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Assurance: Execute manual test suites for new software releases and physical hardware, ensuring high performance and reliability.
Product Expertise: Act as an essential internal point of contact for product functionality, providing technical clarity to the Sales and Support teams.
Issue Management: Identify, document, and triage bugs using industry-standard tools (e.g., Jira), working closely with developers to see fixes through to completion.
Automation Growth: Assist in maintaining and expanding our automated test harnesses as your technical skills evolve.
Documentation: Create and maintain clear test plans, user guides, and internal wikis to ensure a methodical approach to every release.
Technical Skills & Experience
While the successful candidate may not have all of the below listed competencies, any or all of the the following skills would be highly sought after:
Programming: Experience in Python and TypeScript; we use these for our automation frameworks. Familiarity with Playwright, Selenium, or similar tools.
Device Familiarity: Prior experience testing or supporting Android-based devices or complex, bespoke software systems.
Troubleshooting: A naturally methodical approach to problem-solving. Experience pulling logs (ADB), investigating hardware-software interactions, and replicating intermittent issues.
Professional Norms: Familiarity with the Agile/Scrum lifecycle and an understanding of Regression Testing and Exploratory Testing techniques.
Requirements
Education: Demonstrable interest in STEM. While not required, a degree in a STEM subject is highly desirable.
Experience: Approximately 1–2 years of experience in a technical environment (Testing, Technical Support, or similar) would be a great advantage.
Communication: The ability to translate complex technical bugs into actionable feedback for developers and understandable updates for stakeholders.
Why Join Us?
This is a high-impact role in a fast-paced Cambridge tech environment. We don't expect you to know everything on day one, but a proactive attitude and a drive to take ownership of product quality is essential. So if you are looking for an opportunity to grow your career in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, we encourage you to apply for this exciting role.
